After battling near Hurricane TS Ana for 9 days, running low on fuel while 235 nautical miles offshore, the Coastguard rescued us by sending us a Russian Oil Tanker Mariposa to refuel us. Read the full story and details of what lead up to & what happened at this link. http://www.sailboatcruise.ca/2016/10/22/sailboat-refuelled-by-russian-oil-tanker-235-miles-offshore-in-the-mid-atlantic/ At the point when this video was taken the cyclonic winds have dissipated, we were left with strong winds and swells coming from the W SW we could not sail in that direction or any direction toward the coast at this point. This is 8 days later and had nothing to do with the original decision to go offshore, we could only sail North, but seemed to be more North East, the swells were taking us further East...
The Waverider's full reverse chine working hard in chop, at speed, in outgoing swells, and when overtaking waves in a following sea. Observe how easy the ride is by watching the skipper's head during the ride. His head would normally jerk or his torso move forward, but instead the boat eases down smoothly. A quick catch up with Alex Thomson before he docked off from the Newport Shipyard to head to New York in preparation for the Ocean Masters race to Vendee on 29 May. While the offshore race from Newport to New York was cancelled, I still got a sail on the foiling IMOCA "No Way Back" on Saturday afternoon, and I included a few snippets on board with the Canadian Ocean Racing guys after my interview with Alex. Just about to jump on a plane to Japan! Next up, the Moth Worlds.

SV Morning Bird, an S&S34 Captained by John McCormack and crewed by me, sails to Lord Howe Island for the annual November BBQ. LHI is 420nm NE of Sydney, within the Tasman Sea. We had a wide range of conditions: dead calm and flat to 45-50 knots to 4 metre swell plus. Skipper had done the trip a number of times before whereas I had never done any real offshore sailing, only coastal.
Part film, part documentary, part highlight reel, this 25-minute video tells the story of Yana and Chris as they earn their RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper certifications, respectively. Special thanks to Tom and Trafalgar Sailing for a great week of sailing, learning, and fun.
The sixth leg of the 2012 Alpari World Match Racing Tour saw Australia's Keith Swinton (AUS) Black Swan Racing arrive hot off of the back of his first ever Tour victory in Switzerland. Could he make a late charge for the podium in his first full season, with three events still to go? Many expected the return of the youngest ever ISAF Match Racing World Champion from 2009, Adam Minoprio (NZL) to upset the status quo in France but would the Kiwi skipper be able to maintain his impressive match racing form after more than a year in offshore racing? How did he fare against the new breed of young world class skippers? All was revealed on the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean.

Advanced preparation of the vessel and crew are paramount in the successful completion of an offshore voyage. In this webinar, Captain Lee Tucker, a physician for over 30 years, discusses appropriate medical preparations to be made prior to embarking on extended voyages. Crew selection strategies, pre-departure crew medical evaluations and the creation of comprehensive offshore medical response kits are discussed in detail. The presentation describes currently available shore-based emergency support services, how to select them pre-departure, and access them once underway. Although not intended as an inclusive review of all medical emergencies afloat, common and potentially catastrophic medical emergencies at sea will be discussed with tactics for their prevention and management.
The Sebastian Fishing Pier is one of the craziest pier fishing hot spots in the whole country. Pier fishing can be one of the funnest ways to experience fishing. At this pier, dozens of anglers lined up with live shrimp on their hooks eager to catch themselves the BIG one. The waters here are filled with monstrous sized fish just waiting to be caught. Its a true test of MAN VS BEAST. *DISCLAIMER* If you plan on fishing this spot because of this video, you need to understand that there are many unspoken rules of this inlet, and that you need to be respectful of other fishermen. Spend some time observing, talking and asking questions before you even cast out. Watch how other fishermen fish with each other. And seriously make an effort not to tangle up anyones lines. It may be intimidating,...

Recorded in 2011.
